Heather McMahan’s debut of her first Netflix comedy, “Son I Never Had,” garnered a tremendous response from fans, who celebrated her achievement as if their best girlfriend had scored a significant victory.
During a recent Zoom conversation, McMahan said, “What I find most remarkable about this job is the number of individuals who have accompanied me on this journey since the beginning.
Years ago, these amazing people discovered me on social media and have been cheering me on ever since. It’s almost as if I’ve become a part of a massive life sorority, where everyone is ecstatic and saying, ‘She did it!’
After her father’s passing due to pancreatic cancer in 2015, McMahan relocated from Los Angeles to her hometown of Atlanta.
To cope with grief, she began crafting characters and sharing snippets of their stories on social media, gradually amassing a dedicated following. Notable among her creations were boozy Brenda Carlyle, a self-proclaimed top real estate agent from Mississippi, and Margie McDaniels, who touted herself as a
“Hollywood assistant to the stars.”
McMahan explained that after expressing a desire to create amusing content, they began developing many characters on Instagram, which ultimately gained significant popularity.
McMahan’s growing fan base has kept her consistently occupied. Not only has she recently recorded a second stand-up particular set to debut next year, but she is also in the process of finalizing tour dates for 2024, which include performances in Australia.
In addition to her stand-up work, McMahan hosts a popular weekly podcast, “Absolutely Not”, and has a development deal for a TV show.
Furthermore, she has plans to pen a book.
During an interview with The Associated Press, McMahan discussed her career, living situation, and strategies for handling other people’s grief.
Living with your husband, Jeff, and your mother, Robin, do you ever need to clarify this dynamic to others?
I have my mother living with us daily. Recently, someone asked me, “So, when are you moving out?”
I replied, “What do you mean?”
It was a common misconception for them to perceive it as a comedy act or a COVID-related endeavor. However, I clarified by stating, “No, that is not the case.”
We all live together, my mother, my family, in this journey called life.” It can be a challenging concept for some people to grasp. Still, in various cultures, it is common for grandparents to reside with the family, alongside the parents and multiple generations, all under one roof. For Americans, it may seem a bit unusual.

It is also crucial to keep in mind the importance of following up with these individuals even after six months. Often, people offer support immediately, but it can become quiet and isolating as time goes on. This is when the reality of the situation truly sinks in.

Mcmahan: As an abundant source of stories and jokes, it can be challenging to capture them all. Nevertheless, I make it a point to carefully document my experiences and observations to ensure every detail is noticed.
Are female comics subjected to a distinct set of expectations compared to their male counterparts?
Interestingly, some people find it surprising when women like Ali Wong and Amy Schumer discuss their families in comedy. Men have been joking about their wives and kids for a long time, so it’s not new. However, it seems to attract more attention and criticism when women do it.
