If you are a young African scholar and you desire to earn your master’s degree at a top global university, this is great news for you. Mastercard Foundation and the University of Oxford are offering the prestigious fully-funded scholarship programme.

This programme, in the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program and the Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx), will be providing 400 scholarships to African students in pursuit of advancing studies in areas related to pandemic preparedness and recovery.

Program Overview

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, in collaboration with AfOx, seeks to develop exceptional African students who can become leaders and change agents in their respective communities. This program aims to equip scholars with knowledge, skills, and networks to enable them to promote transformative change, particularly in the areas of health, sustainability, and social resilience.

Scholarship Benefits

Scholars who receive this prestigious scholarship will be eligible for:

  • Full Tuition: All the fees related to the tuition for the chosen master’s course shall be covered.
  • Living Costs: Funding will be given to support all living expenses throughout the tenure of the course.
  • Travel Allowance: Funding shall be given to cover the cost of travel to and from University of Oxford.
  • Leadership Development Opportunities: Workshops, mentorship, and networking shall be provided with the intent of developing the leadership skill.
  • AfOx Community Membership: A vibrant network of African scholars and professionals at University of Oxford shall be offered.

How to Apply

To become a Mastercard Foundation Scholar at the University of Oxford, follow these steps:

Submit Your Graduate Application:

Go to the University of Oxford graduate admissions portal and apply for your chosen course.
Make sure to submit your application by the funding deadline (typically in December/January) for the program you’re applying to.

AfOx Graduate Scholarship Program Interview:

Qualified candidates will be invited to attend a virtual interview as part of the selection process.

AfOx Scholarships Selection Process (2025/26 entry)

  • September 2024 – January 2025: Make sure to apply for your choice of course by the latest deadline but ensure you match the exact funding deadline available for your chosen course. To initiate your application visit the webpage of University of Oxford, admissions about courses, fee, funding, and their application procedures. Remember it is that deadlines for several programs can be different than others and thus should consult the website for your concerned course.

Most postgraduate courses at the University of Oxford have deadlines in December or January. Some courses are different. Here are the key dates:

  • 15th November 2024 – Application deadline for some courses.
  • 3rd December 2024 – Application deadline for the Medical Sciences Division and other select programs.
  • 7th January 2025 – Application deadline for Humanities courses.
  • 8th January 2025 – Deadline for application to some Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences courses and the remaining Medical Sciences Division courses.
  • 9th January 2025 – Deadline for application to some Social Sciences courses
  • 28th January 2025 – Deadline for application to other Social Sciences courses
  • 29th January 2025 – Deadline for application to Continuing Education, Law, and other courses.
  • February 2025-April 2025: Provided you meet the requirements, you’ll be sent an email by Student Fees and Funding to attend a remote AfOx scholarship interview, via Zoom.

By July 2025: The outcome of interviews for AfOx scholarship will be communicated to applicants. Those whose applications were successful will receive a letter of offer from Student Fees and Funding and an information pack from AfOx, which will include detailed information about arrival and induction at Oxford.
